Static site generator

Gatsby: still static at the output layer

Gatsby is a React-based SSG. The output is static HTML, even though the build pipeline is heavyweight. If your Gatsby site is still building, you're already on the architecture we'd migrate to.

What Gatsby is

Gatsby is a React-based static site generator with a heavy build pipeline. It pre-renders to HTML at build time.

Gatsby's reputation is mixed because it can be slow to build at scale and has had a turbulent corporate history. But the runtime output is static HTML, and the runtime is what matters for hosting.

If your Gatsby build is still working and you're paying for hosting, switch to Cloudflare Pages — free hosting, automatic builds, no migration. If your Gatsby build is broken and you can't get it working again, that's a different conversation: we can render the live site as static and ship that, abandoning the Gatsby source. What to know before migrating

  • If your Gatsby build is broken and the source is unsalvageable, we can capture the live rendered site as static HTML — but you lose the Gatsby source going forward. That's a Custom-tier project.

Our take

If Gatsby is working, stay there and host on Pages. If Gatsby is broken and the source is gone, we can capture the live site and freeze it. That's the rare case.
